With the surprise of a ‘non-traditional’ Presidential candidate like political outsider Donald Trump winning enough delegates to secure the Republican nomination, the country seems to be in a state of flux. Voters, especially Republicans, have typecast the office of President, but is that what the founding fathers wanted?
Americans have always had the ‘ideal’ of what the President should be, but that has definition has changed over the years. The Founding Fathers seemed brilliant beyond their years when they set minimal qualifications for becoming President.
This gave the American people amazing flexibility in determining the rest of the qualifications depending on the times. Unfortunately, the American people have become stuck in a rut.
As long as I can remember, the President was always someone with vast government experience, someone who can navigate the in’s and out’s of government rules and traditions. At times, they also had some ‘executive’ experience as governors of states.
Sure it’s important experience, but in the end, being a governor is just someone who has managed yet another government.
My concern is, what good is so much government experience when one has little other experience? For too long now, career politicians have been pushing us further toward the brink with little regard to the consequences. All in the name of getting the right ‘experience’ to move to the next level in their ‘career path.’
Of course, 2016 has totally knocked the ‘ideal’ off it’s access. Donald Trump has come in as the non-politician and managed to beat nearly 20 opponents and an establishment set on taking him out. Several outsiders have tried in the past, like Ross Perot or Steve Forbes, but none have ever succeeded to the extent that Donald Trump has.
The difference is, Donald Trump is the right candidate for our time and the primary voters clearly agree. Ever since Barrack Obama has occupied the White House, there has been a hunger to shake things up. The electorate has become more frustrated with establishment Republicans by the day.
Back in 2012, while Mitt Romney was a man with substantial private sector experience, he still proved to be too much of a political insider.
The people want a true outsider, not just a Federal Government outsider. Donald Trump was the answer to their prayers. He is Constitutionally qualified, and is also qualified in the eyes of the pragmatic voter. You see, the ‘ideal’ candidate would never work this election cycle, the Republican Party Establishment has earned Donald Trump.
If the establishment was doing its job, Trump would not be necessary. He is the Band-Aid to stop the bleeding before we can begin to heal the wound.
Trump’s winning the nomination and hopefully the Presidency, will give the Republican Party a chance to reset and give the Country a solid change from the past many years instead of just ‘Democrat Light.’ Trump may not be the Republican ‘Ideal,’ but he is the ‘Ideal’ for today.
